Collection Summary

Collection Title
Miscellaneous programmes (1860-1870)
Description
A collection of ca. 197 programmes from Great Britain, 1860 to 1870. The majority of programmes relate to concerts given in the provinces - in particular from Yorkshire and parts of Scotland - though a couple of London programmes are present. Though the programmes date from 1860 to 1870, there is a concentration of programmes from 1864 to 1868 within the collection.

The programmes are from concerts that took place at a wide variety of venues, which are listed below. However, there is a significant amount of programmes from various venues in Leeds, in particular the Town Hall and the Victoria Hall. In addition, there are a number of programmes from St. George’s Hall, Bradford.

A multitude of types of performance are represented in this collection: though the majority of programmes are from concerts, there are also items from church services and literary readings. In particular, there are concert programmes from choral concerts, solo vocal concerts, lecture concerts and organ demonstrations or openings.

A significant part of the collection relates to Dr. [William] Spark: he was an organist, writer and conductor, particularly active in the Leeds area in the years covered by this collection. The collection includes programmes from Dr. Spark’s lecture recitals and organ demonstrations. There are also programmes which included solo organ items or accompaniments performed by Dr. Spark, as well as concerts where Dr. Spark conducted his own choir, entitled “Dr. Spark’s Choir”.

The collection also contains a few programmes from the series “Charles Hallé's Grand Concerts”, often featuring Hallé as a pianist.
