Papers of Professor Sidney T.M. Newman: 1 box (1941-72)
Collection of ca. 200 miscellaneous programmes belonging to Professor Sidney Newman, Reid Professor of Music, University of Edinburgh. The programmes are in 2 distinct categories, the first being from concerts at the University, most of which he was involved in either as conductor (such ensembles as the Reid Symphony Orchestra, Reid Orchestra, Edinburgh University Musical Society, or Reid Chamber Orchestra), as a solo pianist, or as author of programme notes. The main performance venues are the Usher Hall, Reid School of Music, and the Music Hall. Also included are newspaper clippings about some of the performances, and of performances of Newman’s compositions.
The second category is from his folder of Danish and Norwegian music and composers, consisting of programmes from Norwegian musical festivals, such as the Festspillene i Bergen (Bergen International Festival) (1953) (Norway), the International Society for Contemporary Music Festival: Oslo, Norway (1953), and the Filharmoniske Selskap: Oslo (1952-53)
This is all in a box of Newman’s papers including correspondence, sheet music, reprints of his published articles on music, and music publishers’ catalogues.
